What is a Dagdha Rashi in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic Astrology there is principle of 'Dagdha' the Burnt one. On basis of Day (Dina)- Constellation (Nakshatra), Day (Dina)- Lunar day (Tithi), the Dagdha Yoga is formed. It has its own implications on a birth chart. Based on the Tithi, the Lunar day one is born Dagdha Rashi is determined.

The "Dagdha Rashi" (burnt zodiac sign) simply means the Zodiac Sign which will not give results easily or will deny the results. No matter in which zodiac Ascendant you are born, based on Lunar Day of birth, you will have minimum two zodiac signs as dagdha, burnt and Maximum four zodiac signs can be Dagdha. However there are Two Tithis, the Lunar days when you will have no Sign in your chart as Dagdha.

How Dagdha Rashi is determined

In astrological predictions the day of birth and its Panchanga (Five Limbs of time) holds significant importance in predictive astrology. The Lunar Day (Tithi) plays a highly specific role, though many Vedic astrologers often overlook its importance when making predictions. There are 14 dates in the Shukla Paksha (The bright Lunar fortnight or waxing Moon) and 14 in the Krishna Paksha(Dark Lunar Fortnight or waning moon), making a total of 28 lunar days. Since each Paksha (Cycle) includes both Purnima (full moon) and Amavasya (new moon), the total comes to 30 lunar days, which together form a lunar month. The first lunar day is called Pratipada (1st tithi) and the last lunar day in count is Chaturdashi (14th), excluding Purnima and Amavasya. Every individual is born in one of the Lunar day between Pratipada and Chaturdashi, Purnima or in Amavasya. Each Lunar Day is associated with two zodiac signs as a "Dagdha Rashi," the Burnt Zodiac.

Chaturdashi Tithis (14th Lunar Days) in either Paksha (Lunar Cycle) will have four signs classified under "Dagdha Rashi." No zodiac sign is considered a "Dagdha Rashi" during Purnima or Amavasya. The exact meaning of "Dagdha" is something which is not in a productive form, thus incapable of producing any intended results. However, These "Dagdha Rashi" signs yield either excellent or worst results under specific conditions.

What are the exception rules of Dagdha Rashi

It is always favourable when the "Dagdha Rashi" falls in the Dusthana or Trik Bhava (6th, 8th, 12th houses), because the negative house-placement of a negative zodiac will yield positive results. If a "Dagdha Rashi" is placed in an auspicious house, the good qualities of that house will likely diminish.

Apart from the Sun and Moon, each planet governs two signs. When a "Dagdha" sign principle is involved, signifying one of the sign as Dagdha, it is limited to that sign only (the afflicted sign only), not the other sign ruled by the same planet.

If a benefic planet is retrograde and also placed in a "Dagdha Rashi," it will give good results during its main or sub-period. However, if this benefic planet is direct in motion, it will give the worst results during its main or sub-period. This rule somewhat applies during transits also.

If a malefic planet is positioned in a "Dagdha Rashi" but is moving forward, it will produce good results during its main and sub-periods. However, if this malefic planet is retrograde, it will give the worst results. The rule applies during transits too to an extent. However, the rules of Judging the transits are separate and must be considered accordingly.

Since Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node) always move retrograde and never in direct motion, their placement in a "Dagdha Rashi" will always yield excellent results during their main and sub-periods. However, Rahu will give better results in comparison to Ketu. Though its important to remember that you have to read it in conjunction with the mentioned rules.

If two planets are positioned in a "Dagdha Rashi," one being malefic and the other benefic, with the malefic planet moving forward and the benefic planet retrograde, the sub-period of the benefic planet during the main period of the malefic planet will give excellent results. If, the malefic planet is direct and the benefic planet retrograde, the malefic planet's main period will give good results, but the benefic planet’s sub-period will give poor results, and vice versa.

The Sun and Moon, being luminous planets and being direct in motion at all times, are exempted from the above rules. If their Sign is Dagdha Rashi, that Sign will give its results accordingly but these two luminaries do not carry the blemish of being Dagdha Lord.
